Adoption

Rom 8:15-17   We received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba, Father.”  The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God

Adoption combination of two Greek words.  Means literally to “place as a son”.  Not the usual Greek word for adoption.  The word serves to distinguish those who are made sons by an act of grace as opposed to the only begotten Son of God.  To get across the point we are not children of God by birth like Jesus, but by God’s grace we are to be assimilated as the children of God and have full rights as sons and daughters like Jesus the only truly born Son of God.  Notice it says, “the Spirit of adoption” [the Spirit producing sonship], and “whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”  Therefore, neither “sonship” nor “adoption” are proper literal translations.  But there is no other English word that can accurately relay the meaning in Greek.  95% of all translations, old and modern, chose the word adoption as it comes closer to the Greek word than sonship.

Rom 8:23        We eagerly wait for the adoption, the redemption of our body

Rom 9:4          Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory of the covenants, the laws, the promises

Gal 4:4-5         God sent His Son to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption as sons

Born Into a Spiritual Kingdom, Part 1

Matt 4:17         Jesus began to preach saying, repent for the KOH is at hand.

Jesus’ Gospel means the Good News of the Kingdom of God.

Many scriptures that Jesus preached about the KOG, but let’s just read those that say we can enter the KOG.

Jesus didn’t preach that He came to die for forgiveness of sins. Did tell disciples at His last Passover.

Why love God with all your heart? Neighbor as self?  Why obey? Where live with eternal life?

Matt 5:3           Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the KOH

Matt 5:10         Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sakes, for theirs is the KOH

Matt 5:19         Whoever breaks the least of the laws shall be least in the KOH.  He that teaches them will be great in the KOH

Matt 5:20         Except your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the Pharisees, you won’t enter KOH

Matt 6:10, 13  Your kingdom come.  Deliver us from evil, for yours is the kingdom, power and glory

Matt 6:33         Seek you first the KOG and His righteousness and all these shall be added unto you.

Matt 7:21         Not every one that says Lord, Lord will enter the KOH, but he that does the will of the Father

Matt 8:11-12   Many others join Abraham, Isaac, Jacob in KOH, but many Israelites will not

Matt 11:11       None greater than John, nevertheless, least in the KOH is greater than he.

Matt 11:12       (NLT) And from the time John the Baptist began preaching until now, the Kingdom of Heaven has been forcefully advancing, and violent people are attacking it. (TMSG) For a long time now people have tried to force themselves into God’s kingdom.      (CEV) From the time of John the Baptist until now, violent people have been trying to take over the KOH by force.

Matt 13:11       It is given unto you to know the mysteries of the KOH, but to them it is not given

1Matt 13:43     Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father.  Listen.

Many parables in this chapter about God’s kingdom, the KOH is like …

Matt16:19       I will give you the keys of the KOH.  Whatsoever you bind on earth, HAS been bound in heaven

(TMSG) And that’s not all. You will have complete and free access to God’s kingdom, keys to open any and every door: no more barriers between heaven and earth, earth and heaven. A yes on earth is yes in heaven. A no on earth is no in heaven.”

Matt 18:3-4     Except you be converted and become humble like little children, shall not enter the KOH

Matt 19:14       Don’t forbid little children, for of such is the KOH

Matt 21:31       Two sons, one said okay but didn’t, other said no but did.  Publicans and harlots will go into the KOG before you.

Promises of God            Part 17              January 13, 2024

There are many promises from God about many categories, covenants with Noah, Abraham, Israel, David, etc.

In this series, we are only reviewing promises from God regarding our salvation.

Previous sermon (December 2) was on reconciliation, being at-one with God, Atonement.

Difference between reconciliation and redemption.

Reconciliation comes from the Greek family of words that has its roots in allasso [ajllavssw]. The meaning common to this word group is "change" or "exchange." Reconciliation involves a change in the relationship between God and man (or man and man). It assumes there has been a breakdown in the relationship, but now there has been a change from a state of enmity and fragmentation to one of harmony and fellowship.

Redemption, the purchase back of something that had been lost, by the payment of a ransom. Redemption (apolutrósis) refers supremely to the work of Christ on our behalf, whereby he purchases us, he ransoms us, at the price of his own life, securing our deliverance from the bondage and condemnation of sin. The New Testament frequently speaks of Christ's saving work in this way.

It is through redemption that we are reconciled to God and brought into his kingdom. The very word “atonement” means “at one with God.” Our reconciliation with God through redemption is being made right with God by God. It is his work of grace and our receiving of His unmerited favor.

Jesus’ blood redeems us to the Father

Promises of God            Part 20              October 17, 2024

Feast of Tabernacles, Day 1, Thursday

Promise of a Resurrection, Part 2

Matt 22:23       Sadducees only believe in the Pentateuch (Gen thru Deut) and could find no reference to a resurrection in any of those books.  So, after the Pharisees had failed to “trap” Jesus, the Sadducees who disagreed with the Pharisees on many issues including all their traditions, thought they had a “trap” that would succeed against Jesus.

Matt 22:28-30 The Sadducees assumed the “resurrection of the Pharisees” was back to a physical life.  Jesus didn’t bother to answer their question, but instead went to correct their underlying assumption.  Jesus corrected them for two reasons: (1) They didn’t know [all] the scriptures, and (2) they didn’t know the power of God.  If they had believed in the power of God, they would believe a resurrection was not only possible, but required.

Matt 22:31-33 Concerning the resurrection Jesus quotes from the Pentateuch, Ex 3:6: “I am the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”

Mark 12:18-25 ditto and Luke 20:27-36

Most Orthodox Jews believe that the physical body will be resurrected. in the Messianic Age, when the good will rise from the dead. For this reason, Orthodox Jews forbid many procedures that they consider to cause damage or destruction of the body after death, and will bury their dead rather than cremate.  The afterlife is known as olam ha-ba (literally “coming world" or "next world", עולם הבא in Hebrew), and is related to concepts of Gan Eden, the Heavenly "Garden in Eden", or Paradise, and Gehinnom.  Orthodox and Reform Jewish beliefs on resurrection

Orthodox Jews will bury their dead rather than cremate them for this reason. The resurrection will be a spiritual one. Therefore, the body will not be needed as it is simply a vessel of the soul. There will be a physical resurrection of the body. What happens after someone dies in Judaism?

The very brief answer is that after a person dies, his soul rises to Heaven for judgment before the Divine Tribunal. However, Jewish tradition does not spell out precisely what occurs to the soul at the time of death and what he experiences before and during his ascent to Heaven.

The resurrection is implied in many scriptures and spiritual concepts, mainly eternal life.

Matt 24:31       Jesus will send His angels to gather His elect from the four winds

Luke 14:14      If invite poor to dinner, will be recompensed at the resurrection of the just

Promise of a Resurrection, Part 3

1 Cor 15:3-4, 12-23  Some say no resurrection.  If Christ resurrected, so will we

1 Cor 15:42-44  So is the resurrection of the dead, natural body is raised a spiritual body.

1 Cor 15:50-52  We shall not all sleep, at last trumpet raised incorruptible

Catholic Encyclopedia; General Resurrection:  Resurrection is the rising again from the dead, the resumption of life. The Fourth Lateran Council teaches that all men, whether elect or reprobate, "will rise again with their own bodies which they now bear about with them" (cap. "Firmiter"). In the language of the creeds and professions of faith this return to life is called resurrection of the body (resurrectio carnis, resurrectio mortuorum, anastasis ton nekron) for a double reason: first, since the soul cannot die, it cannot be said to return to life; second the heretical contention of Hymeneus and Philitus that the Scriptures denote by resurrection not the return to life of the body, but the rising of the soul from the death of sin to the life of grace, must be excluded. (We shall treat of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ in a separate article; here, we treat only of the General Resurrection of the Body.)

Characteristics of the risen body: All shall rise from the dead in their own, in their entire, and in immortal bodies; but the good shall rise to the resurrection of life, the wicked to the resurrection of Judgment. It would destroy the very idea of resurrection, if the dead were to rise in bodies not their own. Again, the resurrection, like the creation, is to be numbered amongst the principal works of God; hence, as at the creation all things are perfect from the hand of God, so at the resurrection all things must be perfectly restored by the same omnipotent hand. But there is a difference between the earthly and the risen body; for the risen bodies of both saints and sinners shall be invested with immortality. This admirable restoration of nature is the result of the glorious triumph of Christ over death as described in several texts of Sacred Scripture: Isaiah 25:8; Osee, xiii, 14; 1 Corinthians 15:26; Apocalypse 2:4. But while the just shall enjoy an endless felicity in the entirety of their restored members, the wicked "shall seek death, and shall not find it, shall desire to die, and death shall fly from them" (Revelation 9:6).

Eze 18:4, 20    The soul that sins, it shall die

Matt 10:28       Do not fear those who can kill the body but not the soul.  Fear God who can destroy both

These three characteristics, identity, entirety, and immortality, will be common to the risen bodies of the just and the wicked. But the bodies of the saints shall be distinguished by four transcendent endowments, often called qualities.

  • The first is "impassibility", which shall place them beyond the reach of pain and inconvenience. "It is sown", says the Apostle, "in corruption, it shall rise in incorruption" (1 Corinthians 15:42). The Schoolmen call this quality impassibility', not incorruption, so as to mark it as a peculiarity of the glorified body; the bodies of the damned will be incorruptible indeed, but not impassible; they shall be subject to heat and cold, and all manner of pain.
  • The next quality is "brightness", or "glory", by which the bodies of the saints shall shine like the sun. "It is sown in dishonour," says the Apostle, "it shall rise in glory" (1 Corinthians 15:43; cf. Matthew 13:43; 17:2; Philippians 3:21). All the bodies of the saints shall be equally impassible, but they shall be endowed with different degrees of glory. According to St. Paul: "One is the glory of the sun, another the glory of the moon, another the glory of the stars. For star differeth from star in glory"'(1 Corinthians 15:41-42).
  • The third quality is that of "agility", by which the body shall be freed from its slowness of motion, and endowed with the capability of moving with the utmost facility and quickness wherever the soul pleases. The Apostle says: "It is sown in weakness, it shall rise in power" (1 Corinthians 15:43).
  • The fourth quality is "subtility", by which the body becomes subject to the absolute dominion of the soul. This is inferred from the words of the Apostle: "It is sown a natural body, it shall rise a spiritual body" (1 Corinthians 15:44). The body participates in the soul's more perfect and spiritual life to such an extent that it becomes itself like a spirit. We see this quality exemplified in the fact that Christ passed through material objects.

1 Cor 15:35-38  How are the dead raised?  Like a seed that dies and becomes a new plant.

Promise of a Resurrection, Part 4

1 Cor 6:14       God both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power

2 Cor 4:14       ditto

Phil 3:10-11    I want to know Jesus and His resurrection that I may attain the resurrection from the dead

Col 3:4            When Jesus appears, then we also will appear with Him in glory

1 Thess 4:13-17  The dead in Christ shall rise first.  Then those who are alive will rise in the clouds

Some Protestants believe that in the "resurrection" we will receive new bodies.  Other Protestants believe that in the resurrection, our old bodies will literally rise up out of the ground for us to live in once more.  Many protestant preachers say that our body will be reconstructed from the remains of our body from the grave or where ever it is. The one that was blown up in a bomb explosion will also be recollected and rebuild from ashes. But it will be transformed to a heavenly body. That is what exactly this passage is talking about. The heavenly body will not look the same like the old one. A person who was born without legs will have two perfect legs. A blind person will no longer be blind and the deaf person will hear too.

In some Christian denominations it is understood as a temporary stage before the resurrection of the dead and the saints' return to the New Earth. Some denominations teach that one enters heaven at the moment of death, while others teach that this occurs at a later time (the Last Judgment).[citation needed] Some Christians maintain that entry into Heaven awaits such time as "When the form of this world has passed away." Two related, and often blended, concepts of heaven in Christianity are better described as the "resurrection of the body" as contrasted with "the immortality of the soul". In the first, the soul does not enter heaven until the Last Judgment or the "end of time" when it (along with the body) is resurrected and judged. In the second concept, the soul goes to a heaven on another plane immediately after death. These two concepts are generally combined in the doctrine of the double judgment where the soul is judged once at death and goes to a temporary heaven, while awaiting a second and final judgment at the end of the world.  Some teach that death itself is not a natural part of life, but was allowed to happen after Adam and Eve disobeyed God so that mankind would not live forever in a state of sin and thus a state of separation from God.

Vast majority of Christians believe they go to heaven, or hell, immediately at death.  This makes it impossible for them to understand the resurrection.

2 Tim 1:10      God’s purpose revealed to us by Jesus who abolished death and brought life & immortality

2 Tim 2:11      This is true, if we died with Him, we will also live with Him

2 Tim 4:8(NLT) And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.

Most Muslims believe that when they die, they will stay in their graves until Yawm al-din (the Day of Judgement). On that day, they will be raised from their graves and brought before Allah and judged on how they lived their earthly lives. This belief is known as the resurrection of the body.  After death, most Muslims believe that the soul will enter Barzakh, a state of waiting, until the Day of Judgement. When a person dies, their soul is taken by Azra'il, the Angel of Death. God sends two angels to question the waiting soul.

Heb 6:2           The resurrection of the dead is one of the seven basic doctrines of the gospel.

Heb 11:35       Some OT saints tortured not accepting deliverance that they might obtain a better resurrection

Death and the afterlife. What does Buddhism teach about life after death? Buddhism teaches that there is a cycle of death and rebirth called samsara, 8 stages one goes back and forth until nirvana is achieved. Through karma and eventual enlightenment, Buddhists hope to escape samsara and achieve nirvana, an end to suffering.  Buddhist scriptures also identify various heaven- and hell-like realms—sometimes considered to be states created by the mind—where we may take rebirth. Secular Western Buddhists, however, do not believe in rebirth.  There are many similarities between Hinduism and Buddhism.  Buddhism evolved from Hinduism.

1 Pet 1:3          Blessed be the Father who has begotten us unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus

Rev 20:4-6      I saw thrones, those who had been dead.  They lived and reigned with Christ 1000 years.  But the rest of the dead live not again until the 1000 years are finished.

Rev 20:11-15  Great White Throne to judgment

Isn’t the truth wonderful!

Conclusion

1 Cor 2:9-10(TMSG)  That’s why we have this Scripture text: No one’s ever seen or heard anything like this, Never so much as imagined anything quite like it— What God has arranged for those who love him. But you’ve seen and heard it because God by his Spirit has brought it all out into the open before you.

Heb 11:39-40(NLT) All these people earned a good reputation because of their faith, yet none of them received all that God had promised. For God had something better in mind for us, so that they would not reach perfection without us.
